When it comes to Black Powder there’s a lot of smoke around what’s the best…
My name is AussieJohn Hossack and I’ve been a black powder muzzle loader user for about 10 years now and really enjoy the challenges of hunting with them.
There are many different types of muzzle loaders available today from the first flintlock to percussion caps, traditional and the new inline models.
I myself prefer the new inline style of 50 caliber muzzle loader for hunting dangerous game. My new ultimate muzzle loader is capable of shooting out to 300 yards and hit a dinner plate with a 250 grain sabot projectile and that’s pretty sweet shooting for any black powder rifle!
There are so many different types of black powder on the market especially in the USA and the traditional black powder - well its very dangerous stuff to handle apart from been very corrosive as well and requires extensive cleaning after use and I don’t like any of those three factors full stop.
I was introduced to the Alliant range of powders which manufacture many powders for firearms today including “Black MZ” a new dependable muzzle loader performance powder and Black MZ is a black powder replacement designed for hunters, Cowboy Action shooters and re-enactment enthusiasts alike.
Old traditional black powders have many draw backs like moisture and failing to fire at that critical moment where Black MZ is moisture resistant and replicates black powder performance without the ignition headaches and cleaning hassles common to traditional black powder use.
When it came to reloading after the first or second shot with a muzzle loader, normally you would have to swab the barrel in order to be able to get a new sabot projectile down the barrel, but Black MZ burns cleaner with far less residue. I found I could shoot at least six times or more without having to swab the barrel, which meant I could get a second shot away a lot quicker and that really matters when you’re hunting dangerous big game!
My new ultimate muzzle loader is built for heavy loads and has a rifle primmer ignition so it burns hotter and faster so I worked up a load and found that 140 grains of Black MZ by volume with a 250 grains projectile leaves the barrel at 2193 giving velocities at lower pressures.
Most of the modern inline muzzle loaders normally recommend 90-100 grains by volume with a 250 grain projectile and they use a 209 shot gun primmer as ignition, so you MUST check the recommended load from your manufacture before attempting any of your own loads as magnum loads do not equal accuracy and there no point sending unburnt powder down the barrel either or risking a catastrophe.
I have hunted in North America, New Zealand and Australia with my trusty muzzle loader and taken some world record book game with it. I have found a reliable, clean, and accurate powder in Alliant’s Black MZ and it’s available in Australia from the importer NIOA Trading.
